The Department of International Development (DFID) is the UK Government Department charged with providing development aid and assistance to Malawi.

DFID is spending £65m for the 2005/06 financial year on the following programmes;
  • The economy through £20 million of budget support in 2005/06 designed to help the Government of Malawi tackle a large inherited domestic debt and set Malawi.
  • Hunger including funding an effective early warning system and food operations with £15 million in 2005/06 so far.
  • Health with £100 million of aid over 6 years to a new health SWAp. £55 million will address urgent human resource problems and £45 million will finance improved facilities, drugs and other supplies.
  • Education with support for primary education
  • Governance with support for democratic consolidation, anti-corruption and the budget process.
