The High Commission in Lilongwe is able to issue consular birth certificates provided the person concerned is a British Citizen and the birth took place in Malawi.

There are several advantages to having consular birth certificates:

• a High Commission issued birth certificate provides sufficient evidence of nationality for UK passport purposes
• replacement copies of the certificates can be obtained easily from the High Commission or the General Records Office
• the certificates are more widely recognised documents than Malawian birth certificates

The High Commission does not register marriages. Provided the marriage is valid and legal in Malawi for administrative purposes it will be recognised in the UK.
